Shichen Wang was born in Fujian, China. He completed the Oil Painting program at Musashino Art University and subsequently finished the university’s doctoral program, obtaining a PhD in Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in Tokyo.

His practice situates painting within the framework of artistic research, approaching memory not as a complete narrative but as a structure continually reconfigured through fragmentation, repetition, and erasure under specific historical conditions.

His work is rooted in the rapid social transformations of China around the turn of the millennium, taking the interweaving of historical context and personal experience as a point of departure for visual inquiry. The images in his work originate from everyday objects drawn from memory; they function both as signifiers of autobiography and as social traces generated under specific historical and perceptual conditions. Through formal operations such as layering, concealment, and visual suspension, the work interrupts linear temporality, allowing images to hover between documentation and disappearance.

In parallel with his artistic practice, Wang is involved in exhibition planning and art-related projects, including the collaborative production of artist books, sustaining a practice that places artistic creation and research in deliberate juxtaposition.
